Nice Guys Don’t Always Finish Last!
Noosa nice guy Mr M didn’t expect to win first prize in Lottery 175.
But, the Noosa resident has now taken possession of a stunning Pacific Harbour home and furniture package at Bribie Island along with bonus Gold Bullion bringing his prize total to $966,540.
“People like me aren’t supposed to win anything,” he said.
Mr M did not return any of the initial calls from the Surf Life Saving team on the day of his win and a whole weekend went by before we could contact him. When we did reach him, it took around five minutes on the telephone with our Head of Foundation Steve Francia to convince him he had won the major prize.
“I have always bought Surf Life Saving lottery tickets because lifesavers do a great job.
“But when I got the call, I thought it was someone trying to sell me more tickets, so I didn’t even bother to listen to the message. I’m still pretty embarrassed about my initial reaction.
“Like most people I suppose, you don’t really have the expectation you’ll win – but this time I did.”
Mr M could not initially find the winning ticket and thought perhaps we had made a mistake.
“I called Steve and said, I can’t see that ticket number in my tickets – are you sure you haven’t made some kind of mistake,” he laughed when recalling the telephone call.
However, once it was explained to him that he would have received two allocations of tickets as a Champions Club member, he went away and checked his second allocation of tickets – and sure enough there was number 4965791. He could finally allow himself to believe it could be true.
“I have shared the news with family and friends and everyone is delighted for us – in fact they are all excited that they know a prize home winner!” he said.
When asked about his future plans Mr M said, “We’ll sell the house because we have only recently settled on the Noosa property, but that will give us some breathing room and we can do some travel, relax and decide what to do for the next phase of our life. After running a seven day a week business for several years, it would be great to slow things down a bit and get our weekends back, so finding a five day business would be ideal.”
